NEMA 4X Enclosures, Cabinets and Boxes are intended for indoor and outdoor use primarily to provide a degree of protection against direct spray of water on the enclosure surface.

A typical example of NEMA 4X Type Enclosure would be a rugged (304, 316) stainless steel (indoor / outdoor) box with environmental seals used for electronic controls in a chemical plant, wastewater treatment facility, sanitary process environment and oil & gas offshore drilling rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. Usually, the NEMA 4X stainless steel box, enclosure & cabinet products tend to be medium to higher priced than other powdercoated enclosures. But of course, stainless steel NEMA 4X enclosures are suitable for most dusty, dirty and sloppy wet environments (rain, splashing water, dripping water pipes, salt water spray) but the NEMA 4X enclosures are not submersible enclosures.

Corrosion is the natural degradation of a material due to atmospheric conditions or other factors. Corrosion is generally defined as dissolution of a material due to a reaction with the surrounding environment. Only metals such as gold and platinum are found in a pure form, normal metals only exist combined with other elements. Corrosion is therefore a natural phenomenon, as nature seeks to combine elements which man has produced in a pure form. More specific: iron occurs naturally as iron ore (FE) wants to combine with oxygen molecules from the air and water and then it will "rust". Carbon steels without any protection will therefore form a coating of rust, which will in a sense protect the rest of the steel and constantly removing the rust exposes a new fresh layer of steel to be chemical decompostion. Therefore, carbon steel enclosure, box and cabinet products will rust when there is no protective coatings on the surfaces. And the corrosion resistance of a stainless steel is dependent on a thin invisible film on the steel surface that is called the passive film. There are, however, environments that cause permanent breakdown of the passive layer. Under circumstances where the passive layer cannot be rebuilt, corrosion occurs on the unprotected surface. Different media can cause different types of corrosion attack that may vary in nature and appearance, and several forms of corrosion can occur on stainless steels. And therefore, some stainless steel enclosure, box & cabinet products will rust when the stainless is contaminated or damaged.
Stainless Steel - Corrosion Resistance - Chrome Content
Stainless steel is the generic name for a number of different steels used primarily because of their corrosion resistance. All stainless steels share a minimum percentage of 10.5% chromium. Chromium is always the deciding factor, although other elements, particularly nickel and molybdenum, are added to improve corrosion resistance. The success of the material is based on the fact that it has one unique advantage. The chromium in the stainless steel has a great affinity for oxygen, and will form a film of chromium oxide on the surface of the steel at a molecular level. The film itself is extremely thin, about 130 Angstroms and one Angstrom is one millionth of a centimetre. This layer is described as passive (does not react or influence other materials), tenacious (clings to the layer of steel and is not transferred elsewhere) and self-renewing (if damaged, more chromium from the steel will be exposed to the air and form more chromium oxide). This means that over a period of years a stainless steel knife can literally be worn away by daily use and will still remain stainless.

Note that is necessary to use the correct inert gases, welding rods, and (non contaminated) stainless tools are required in order to prevent NEMA 4X Type stainless steel box, enclosure & cabinet products from being contaminated.

Stainless Passivation for Additional Corrosion Resistance and Repair of Damaged Stainless Steel
The stainless steel composition can be damaged by welding or some forms of metal fabrication. To ensure the NEMA 4X stainless steel box, enclosure & cabinet products have high corrosion resistance to chemicals and salt water, it is necessary to passivate the NEMA 4X enclosures. Also, Nemaco offers NEMA 4X Type enclosure, box and cabinet products in 5052 aluminum. The Aluminum NEMA 4X enclosure, box and cabinet products are light weight and the corrosion resistance properties are different for the grade 5052 aluminum. The aluminum NEMA 4X enclosures can be powder coated and they look great.
