NEMA 4 Type Enclosure Ratings & Defintions Definition Intended for indoor or outdoor use primarily to provide a degree of protection against windblown dust and rain, splashing water, and hose directed water; undamaged by ice that forms on the enclosure. NEMA 4 Type Enclosure Examples A typical example of NEMA 4 enclosure would be a metal box used for electrical controls in a lab or any indoor environment that is dry and there is no dripping pipes and rain. NEMA 4 Enclosures are typically lower cost enclosures made from sheet metal or plastic. So basically it is box the keeps electrical wired away from humans but it does not necessary have any protection against dust, dirt, oil, water, any other fluid. Usually, The NEMA 4 enclosures are manufactured from carbon steel and powder coated. The metal (carbon steel) NEMA 4 enclosures are more durable than plastic. There are cheap plastic enclosures available but the plastic enclosures get damaged easily.
